Written for my Oxford elective: Global Sustainable Business

Microsoft's Sustainability Strategy

How Microsoft turned a sustainability commitment into a supply-chain shaping mechanism, and what that means for enterprise AI positioning.

Microsoft's climate commitments are frequently characterised as values-led corporate responsibility. This paper argues they are primarily a market-shaping strategy. The 2030 carbon-negative and 2050 historical-carbon-removal pledges, combined with the supplier emissions requirements embedded in Microsoft's procurement standards, function as a mechanism to embed Microsoft's sustainability standards into enterprise supply chains where Microsoft is already the dominant platform vendor. The strategy creates switching costs, market legitimacy, and regulatory alignment simultaneously. The paper maps the mechanism, assesses the competitive implications, and considers what it means for enterprise AI positioning.
